Verify with a local number when signing up abroad

Many messaging, delivery, shopping and local apps only accept numbers from their own country. You can still get the code with a virtual number.

Why a local number matters

Some apps decide where you can use them from the country code you enter. A foreign number can stop you at the sign-up screen.

A local number helps when you sign up before a trip, or need the same app as family living abroad.

Choosing the country

The safest choice is a number from the country where you'll use the app. Pick the app first in the number box and the countries it accepts appear, cheapest first.

Prices vary by app even within one country. You see the price before buying, and it comes off your balance when you get the number.

When the code doesn't come

If no code arrives in 20 minutes, the price returns to your balance automatically. Trying a nearby country usually works.

If the app will ask you to log in with that number again later, pick a rental number from the start.
